The Best Big Island Hawaii Snorkeling Beaches

Aloha Dear Friends,
I love snorkeling. It gives me a chance to shut the outside world out and emerge myself into a dream state of ocean life. I never know what I’m going to see and there’s always a plethora of treats and surprises from swimming with Honu (sea turtles) to exploring the vibrant colors of the ocean floor.
One of my friends Chris even had the gift of swimming with a sea horse last year. Wow, can you imagine that?
Here are some of my favorite snorkeling spots on Big Island Hawaii:
1. 2 Step at Captain Cook
I have seen spinner dolphins there many times, and you can swim out and play with them. Swimming in the open ocean with these beautiful dolphins is for sure an incredible experience and gives the feeling of freedom, taking you beyond your body and mind.
2. Kua Bay Beach
When you’re facing the ocean, the rocks to the right have an array of stunning fish, and I swam with a sea lion in February, amazing. Make sure the waves are not too big when you head out, Kua Bay waves can get pretty exhilarating.
3. Hapuna Beach Turtle Point
When you’re facing the ocean, it’s the rocks all the way to the right. You will definitely see some Moonish Idol fish. The name was given from the Muslim inhabitants in Africa, who believed the fish would bring happiness in their lives.
4. Mauna Kea, Kauna’oa Bay
Then again the rocks to the right. I swam with a white tipped reef shark around the corner from Kauna’oa Bay. I thought I would be scared, but it was such a beautiful experience to swim with a shark in the wild ocean.
5. Puako
I live in Puako, and it’s incredible to just walk out of my home 20 feet and snorkel with turtles and brightly colored fish. Especially on a hot summers day.
I enjoy the night snorkeling with Manta Rays and highly highly recommend exploring this incredible creature, definitely a bucket list adventure.
My two favorite boat charters are Liquid Hawaii and Captain Chad’s Charters. Their service is impeccable, and I always feel safe in the water with the crew by my side. They put on a great spread, and the boats have only six people per trip, so you’re not crowded with a whole bunch of people slashing their fins in your face. Mention my name, and they will give you extra special treatment.
Indigenous Polynesian people saw manta rays as the symbol of spirit guardians representing graceful strength and wisdom.
I hope this was helpful and feel free to leave a message if you wish, I would love to hear from you.
