Aloha Dear Friends,
When I was growing up in South Africa I was a passionate surfer and now living on the Big Island, I have taken up surfing once again.
Surfing is such a graceful art of feeling the power of a wave carry you in her essence. The excitement of catching a wave is truly exhilarating. Not to mention the incredible full-body workout, toning and strengthening your body. For me, surfing is like a meditation. Surfing is food for my soul.
Surfing originated in Polynesia and advanced in Hawaii. Many of us are familiar with “The Duke,” Kahanamoku, the farther of surfing here in Hawaii. His talent won him 3 Olympic gold medals for United States and considered one of the greatest freestyle swimmers in the world. Duke was born 26th of August 1890 in Waikiki, Oahu.
When you visit Oahu you will see the most beautiful statue of him at Waikiki Beach and is always blessed with leis around his neck, surfers from all over the world come and pay tribute to his greatness in the surfing world.

4 of My Favorite Spots to Surf on Big Island
1. Pine Trees
Just north of Kona and has consistent surf all year round.
2. Banyan’s
Located in Kona, this is a popular and local spot for more experienced surfers. This is also a hotspot for surfing competitions.
3. Kahalu’u
Also located in Kona is a wonderful spot for beginners and you can book surfing lessons and surfboard rentals at the bay.
4. Honoli’i
On Hilo side, this is also a local spot that is at a mouth of the river and a fun place to catch some waves.
“It’s like the mafia. Once you’re in, you’re in. There’s no getting out.” -Kelly Slater
If you are new to surfing and looking to buy your first surfboard, you have many options. My friend just bought a cool board at Costco for $129.00 and is perfect for beginners. And in a year, you may want to get onto something more advanced. Speak to an expert at the local surf shops for guidance.
Now when you are out there on the ocean and it’s just you and your board in mother nature’s arms, you can’t help but feel the aloha spirit. It may be the sounds of the waves in the stillness you feel before you catch a wave or it might be the smell of the salty air or the feel of your surfboard beneath you that will lure you in for more.
